Tomeico Faison, OTR/L, Founder & CEO.
Introduction:
[Tomeico Faison] has been an occupational therapist since 2001 and is the owner of Therapeutic Solutions of NC, LLC since 2003. People often describe her as a serial entrepreneur as she loves business start-up and seeing therapists excel in business endeavors. Her companies include: Therapeutic Solutions-provides contractual OT and counseling services to under-served populations (people with low vision, people with MI and people with DD) across NC and Faison Consulting-consulting and coaching services to universities, organizations and therapists to increase therapy business ownership globally. (therapeuticsolutionsofnc.com and faisonconsulting.com)
[Tomeico] loves helping therapists create fun, profitable, service-oriented, lifestyle businesses and have a goal of helping at least one million therapy entrepreneurs in my lifetime. She is a curriculum writer for Duke’s new OTD program and teaches entrepreneurship modules at RMC. She is also the founder of Therapeutic Solutions Outreach, a nonprofit to help persons with financial hardship who cannot afford devices and/or services. Finally, she is the author of Occupational Therapy: Ten Simple Steps to Independent Contracting.
In her spare time, [Tomeico] loves hanging with her family–husband of 20 years, 2 sons, mom and sister and a host of animals, shopping, listening to music and writing and reciting poetry.
What is your passion and area of practice in occupational therapy?
Social entrepreneurship! I also love community mental health and low vision rehab.
What is your cultural or racial background? How does this influence you as a person and/or as an OT ?
African-American
It pushes me to serve as a mentor and support diversity initiatives due to my experiences as typically being the only African-American in both educational and professional settings.
What is it like being a minority in this profession? Any advice for minority students pursuing a career in occupational therapy?
There have been challenges with identify when I was newer to the profession and the only minority in various settings–times when I was a lot more reserved than my natural personality. My confidence however has increased over time and I think regardless of the lack of diversity in professional groups, I am now more likely to speak up and lead in the spaces in which I find myself. I realize that there are other minorities who are looking for me, waiting for me and following me so to shrink and not allow my potential to shine because of my skin color or background is a disservice to myself, others and society as a whole because together we are all impacting society.
My advice for minority students is to find a mentor and/or support group and support diversity initiatives–you will meet like-minded people who can help you along your journey and you will contribute to solutions that are needed in our profession!
What is one interesting fact about you?
I like knocking down walls! So, I said I am a serial entrepreneur and real estate investing is one of our family businesses. I do not enjoy hard labor except for knocking down walls and tearing up stuff.
